What is bioscience at P&G?

What is P&G's investment in R&D?

I always thought science at P&G was more chemistry-driven — what is the role of bioscience?

What are some of your recent bioscience innovations?

Biology covers a broad range of disciplines these days, from basic biology to biochemistry to biotechnology. This range of disciplines provides powerful tools to meet our product innovation needs. The biology can be involved in either the need itself (e.g., inflammation) or in the solution (e.g., use of enzymes — a biological molecule — to clean laundry better). Visit Search Our Needs to find the bioscience need that matches your innovation.

P&G invests $1.8 billion annually in this area. We have a 7,300-strong R&D team that operates on four continents, in nine countries, in more than 20 facilities and includes more than 1,250 Ph.D.s.

Chemistry continues to be a core part of our work; however, solutions in chemistry have evolved to include aspects of biology, biochemistry and biotechnology. In addition, the importance of bioscience has become evident as knowledge of biology has grown globally and as we have realized the prominent role biology plays in many of our consumer product categories.

Many of the most recognizable, billion-dollar brands at P&G are the result of bioscience innovations. Click here to learn how our billion-dollar brands benefit from bioscience innovations: What is Bioscience?

We're looking for bioscience solutions to three general categories of needs: Health and Medical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Capabilities. Within those categories there are 26 subcategories, each with a number of specific needs. Visit Search Our Needs to find the bioscience need that matches your innovation.

Each bioscience innovation has multiple applications, and, therefore, it is important for you to do a thorough search to see if there is a match between your innovation and our needs. Chances are, your innovation in its present stage of development may not be what we're looking for because you probably did not originally develop it with our needs in mind. We'd like you to think through your innovation in the context of how it can be used for P&G products. And that begins by determining if there's a good match. To begin the discovery process, visit Search Our Needs.

P&G Bioscience is a group of science and business professionals from P&G business units that are dedicated full time to seeking and evaluating innovations. We have built a worldwide network to solicit innovations, and use an efficient system to seek and evaluate bioscience opportunities.

The P&G Bioscience Council is a group of top R&D managers from each of P&G's business units who work with the Bioscience group to apply innovation opportunities directly to products in their business. They meet monthly with the Bioscience group to manage the review and follow-up of these opportunities.

P&G Bioscience has strategically positioned locations around the world. In order to reach the best and brightest minds, we have created an international group that leads the charge in innovation development at key research points. Should we pursue further development of your innovation for P&G, you will be working with a Bioscience Director responsible for your region. See where we are located.

To submit an innovation, just follow the steps on the Submit Your Innovation page. A key piece of information we ask for is a brief, nonconfidential description of what your innovation does to meet one of the research needs on our list. Your proposal will be strengthened by indicating why your innovation is superior to others available and whether you have data demonstrating the benefit.

Your submission will be forwarded to the Bioscience Director for your region, who will review it and verify that it might meet the stated need. If so, it will be sent to the appropriate business units for more thorough evaluation. We will do our best to respond to you as soon as possible, which is usually four to five weeks.

There are many ways P&G might reward you for your innovations. The rewards come in the form of licensing of your products, royalties, purchasing of intellectual property, etc. The specific reward is decided on an individual basis, depending on the strength and usefulness of your innovation.
